Sustainable Procurement of Natural Rubber

As a manufacturer and supplier of products, the Sumitomo Riko Group procures many types of raw materials and resources. Mindful that a company is not only responsible for its products but is also responsible for the impact on society of its supply chain, we practice socially responsible procurement. Working with our suppliers, we have begun ascertaining the status of the CSR activities of our secondary suppliers, in addition to those of primary suppliers.
In this process, we accord particular importance to natural rubber, which we procure mainly from Southeast Asia, and confirm step by step that there are no problems concerning the working environment and human rights.
The director in charge of procurement and procurement managers of Sumitomo Riko regularly visit natural rubber farms and natural rubber processors (secondary and tertiary suppliers) to ascertain the current status of points of concern from a CSR perspective in natural rubber processing.
Recent visits covered natural rubber processors in Thailand in 2016 and natural rubber processors in Indonesia, Malaysia, and Vietnam in 2017. Interviews with them cover promotion of CSR activities, environmental management, the situation of labor and human rights, and other subjects. We also conduct on-site inspections of plantations and processing plants.
The Sumitomo Riko Group intends to maintain its commitment to sustainable natural rubber procurement, and thus contribute to the establishment of a sustainable society, through constructive engagement with rubber farms and natural rubber processors.

Participation in UN Forum on Business and Human Rights

Sumitomo Riko has been participating in the UN Forum on Business and Human Rights since 2016. This annual event is held to discuss trends and issues concerning the Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights endorsed by the UN Human Rights Council in 2011 and promote cooperation in their implementation.
Sumitomo Riko's participation in a session as a panelist in the 2016 Forum was a first for a Japanese company. We presented our human rights initiative on natural rubber procurement, which we are pursuing as part of supply chain CSR. Sumitomo Riko also participated in the 2017 Forum. Our initiatives on business and human rights are progressing in terms of their breadth and depth.
